An interesting Pasuk in this week’s Sidra tells us of two obligations a Jew has. The Torah says: VELO TECHALELU ET SHEM KODSHI VENIKDASHTI BETOCH BNEI ISRAEL, “You shall not desecrate my Holy Name, and I will be sanctified among the Children of Israel…”. (Lev. 22,32)

The first phrase warns us against desecrating Hashem’s name. This means we should not act in such a manner as to bring shame on the Jewish people and thus desecrate the Name of Hashem. The point has been made often that when a Jew is

SHABBAT  EMOR

accused of committing a wrongful act, it is not he alone who is disgraced but all of the Jewish people are blamed. That is why we should avoid what has become known as CHILLUL HASHEM, the desecration of Hashem’s Name.

That itself is not sufficient. That is what we call a negative Mitzvah. There is, however, a positive Mitzvah known as KIDDUSH HASHEM or the sanctification of Hashem’s Name. This means that a person is obligated to conduct himself in such a manner so as to bring glory upon the Jewish people and thus sanctifying Hashem. One should be ever mindful of what he does for it affects not only himself but the Jewish people as a whole and Hashem as well.
