The Halacha states that one is prohibited to sit down to eat before he feeds his animals. (Orech Chaim 167;6) This is derived from the Pasuk we recite twice daily in the second paragraph of the Shema. Hashem promises He will provide grass in the fields for the animals and you will eat and be satisfied. Since Hashem first mentions He will feed the animals and then man hence we should follow the same practice.

With regard to drink this rule does not apply. Man should drink first and then give the animals to drink. This we cans see in our Torah Portion of the week. When Moshe is instructed to extract water from the rock, Hashem says to Moshe: VEHISHKITA ET HA’EDAH VE’ET BE’IRAM, “…and you will give drink to the assembly and to their animals.”(Num 20,8) Here we see that when it comes to drink people come before animals.

This is also seen even more forcefully from Rivka. When Avraham’s servant asked her for water she first gave it to him and then offered to give water to his camels.

Perhaps the reason for the difference between food and water is that a person can go without food a longer period of time than he can without water.

When Moshe sent the spies to visit Israel he sent twelve, one from each tribe. At the end of the forty years journey in the Wilderness, when Yehoshua sent spies for the same purpose, he sent only two. Why the difference?

It has been suggested that in the time of Moshe, in the beginning of the difficult

DVAR TORAH- PARASHAT SHELACH

journey, the tribes were not united. They were all vying for positions of recognition. There was competition between them. Hence Moshe would not be able to select two individuals who would be satisfactory to all the tribes.
Forty years later, after Moshe succeeded in unifying the people, and after a new generation grew up, it was natural for Yehoshua to be able to make his selection and no tribe would question his choice. The tribes respected each other and relied on one another.

When people are united it is much easier to accomplish one’s goal and the results are also better.

DVAR TORAH- PARASHAT NASO

There are three prohibitions placed upon a Nazir or Nasserite. He may not drink wine or any beverage derived from grapes; he may not cut his hair; and he may not become Tammeh or spiritually defiled. (Num. 6,4-6)

In keeping with this passage the theme of the Haftarah is about the prediction of the birth of Samson who was to be a modified form of a Nazir all his life. An angel appears to the future mother and directs her to keep the laws of the Nazir during her pregnancy for her son will be a Nazir all his life, beginning in the womb. The wife’s husband, Mano’ach, prayed to Hashem to send the angel again. The famous Malbin commentary explains that he felt the instructions to keep the laws of the Nazir given to the mother pertained to her and not the future child. He was interested in how the child should be treated.

The story continues to tell us that his prayer was answered and the angel did appear again and was asked about the duties of the child. The angel repeats what he told the mother. He does not directly answer Mano’ach’s request.

Rabbi Soloveitchik asks what was accomplished by the second appearance of the angel. He answers in the name of his grandfather, Rabbi Chaim, that the angel was telling the husband that the child was to be a Nazir even before he was born. He was sanctified while still in the womb. Reaffirming what he had told the child’s mother.

In light of what we know today, we understand that a child’s personality begins to be formed even before birth and what the mother does can affect the child.

DVAR TORAH- PARASHAT BAMIDBAR

When Hashem instructs Moshe to take a census of the Children of Israel in the Wilderness, he charges him to appoint a representative from every tribe to serve as part of the census takers. This individual had to be: ISH ROSH LEVET AVOTAV HU, “…a man who is a leader of his father’s household.” (Num. 1,4)

The word used to designate a leader of the household is ROSH which in Hebrew means head. Implied in this choice of word is a considerably noteworthy meaningful message. The leader should be the head of his family, that is, he is to be the guide and the one who sets the direction for his tribe.

This implies that he should not be chosen on the merits of his father or his inherited status. He must be a leader in his own merit. Too often we find people attain positions of leadership, not because they are capable or worthy of the position but because of who their family is or who they know. This can be disastrous if they really have no inherent ability.

DVAR TORAH- PARASHAT BECHUKOTAI

In BeChukotai we are promised that if we walk in the path of the Torah Hashem will send us blessings and peace. There will be prosperity in the land and we shall dwell in tranquility and security. The passage ends with the statement by Hashem that he took us out of Egypt and redeemed us from slavery: VA’OLECH ETCHEM KOMEMIYUT, “… and I led you erect.” (Lev. 26,13) What exactly is the meaning of the word KOMEMIYUT, erect?

Rashi explains that it means erect in stature. That means we were brought to the Promised Land as a proud people standing up prominently and proudly. Rabbi Meir in the Talmud has a slightly different interpretation. He deals with the plural of the word and connects it with the double height of Adam, the first man. (B.B. 75a)

This is also somewhat enigmatic. What did Rabbi Meir imply? Before Adam transgressed he was physically faultless as he had been created by Hashem and he was also spiritually perfect with direct communication with his Creator. He excelled in his physical appearance and in his spiritual status. That is how we were brought into the Promised Land.

This is our prayer in Grace After Meals. HARACHAMAN HU YOLICHENU KOMEMIYUT LE’ARTZENU, Hashem should lead us upright to our land with the double exalted stature. We should have the physical perfection of the land and the spiritual excellence it offers.

An interesting Pasuk in this week’s Sidra tells us of two obligations a Jew has. The Torah says: VELO TECHALELU ET SHEM KODSHI VENIKDASHTI BETOCH BNEI ISRAEL, “You shall not desecrate my Holy Name, and I will be sanctified among the Children of Israel…”. (Lev. 22,32)

The first phrase warns us against desecrating Hashem’s name. This means we should not act in such a manner as to bring shame on the Jewish people and thus desecrate the Name of Hashem. The point has been made often that when a Jew is

SHABBAT EMOR

accused of committing a wrongful act, it is not he alone who is disgraced but all of the Jewish people are blamed. That is why we should avoid what has become known as CHILLUL HASHEM, the desecration of Hashem’s Name.

That itself is not sufficient. That is what we call a negative Mitzvah. There is, however, a positive Mitzvah known as KIDDUSH HASHEM or the sanctification of Hashem’s Name. This means that a person is obligated to conduct himself in such a manner so as to bring glory upon the Jewish people and thus sanctifying Hashem. One should be ever mindful of what he does for it affects not only himself but the Jewish people as a whole and Hashem as well.
