This week’s portion warns against gossiping. The Torah says LO TELECH RACHIL BE’AMECHA, “Do not go about your people telling gossip.” (Lev. 19:16) If we are not to speak gossip, why are we told “among your people”? It should simply say, “Do not tell gossip”.

Many people know it is wrong to tell tales about our friends and neighbors although they may not be too careful about complying. They feel, however, it is legitimate to bear tales about our people. They do not hesitate to speak evil about the Jewish people or the State of Israel. We often hear people criticizing our people or our country. For that matter this also applies to the United States. The newspapers have stories daily about how people are slandering the United States.

The Torah, therefore, emphasizes the word BE’AMCHA, “about your people”. Not only should you be careful about what you say that may affect individuals, your friends and family, but also me mindful of the honor of your people and your country. Gossip is a horrible trait and on

On Chol Hamo’ed Pesach, as well as Succot, we read the Torah portion which deals with a discussion between Moshe and Hashem following the episode of the Golden Calf. Moshe asks that he be shown the glory of Hashem so that he will understand the workings of Hashem.

The response he got was that no man can understand the workings of Hashem. Hashem did, however, intend to give him some understanding. He tells him: VENITZAVTA AL HATZUR, “…you will stand on the rock”, and He adds that when His glory shall pass over him, VESAMTICHA BENIKRAT HATZUR, “…I

SHABBAT CHOL  HAMOED

shall place you in the cleft of the rock…”. (Ex. 33,21-22)

This is a very difficult passage to understand. What is implied by standing on the rock or in the rock? In a homiletic sense, though, one can read a strong message into this. There are times when a leader must stand firmly as if they were on the top of a rock and not succumb to pressures from within or from without. In other times they should be prepared to step aside and place themselves in a less formidable position, that is, to stand in the rock and not defiantly on top.

The sign of a good leader is one who knows which of these positions they should take. Not every leader is capable of making this distinction.

DVAR TORAH- PARASHAT ACHAREI

Sometimes we look at all the mitzvos and feel overwhelmed and constrained – so many things to do, so many things not to do. The Torah tells us (18:5), “You shall observe My decrees and My laws, which man should do and live through them, I am Hashem.” Why does the verse add the words “I am Hashem” at the end? Perhaps the verse can be explained as telling us that if we want to live a meaningful and purposeful life then the advise of the Torah is to observe the mitzvos. Even though it may seem that all the rules and regulations are difficult and will impede our life, the Torah tells us to put it to test – truly keep the mitzvos, and then you will experience living, real living. And if you suspect the advise, the Adviser knows what He is talking about. He is none other than G-d Himself, the Designer and Creator of the world in which we live. In the same way that if we want to maximize the usuage of car, you would listen to the advise of the designer and his manual, so too if you want to optimize your time in this world you should listen to the advise of the world’s Designer and His manual (the Torah). He knows what He is talking about!

DVAR TORAH- PARASHAT TAZRIA
The Torah describes the symptoms of a malady which it calls צרעת, Tzara’at. Modern medicine cannot accurately identify this sickness. According to the Torah the Kohen has to examine the signs and determine if it is truly this affliction. Since the Kohen is not a doctor our sages recognize this is not a normal infection but rather an outward manifestation of a spiritual deficiency.

The Rabbis of the Talmud state that a Kohen is eligible to diagnose everyone’s symptoms except his own. This is a strange restriction since even a doctor may recognize his own symptoms. The Rabbis’ meaning, however, has a broader implication. They recognize that people can readily see faults in others but they cannot see their own faults.

This is why they maintain that the Kohen can diagnose the Tzara’at of others but not his own. Since this ailment is not a usual type of sickness but an indication of a spiritual deficiency, they are not able to judge their own status.
