  • DVAR TORAH- PARASHAT TZAV

Moshe is told to instruct the Israelites that:

ESH TAMID TUKAD AL HAMIZBE’ACH LO TICHBE, “A permanent fire shall burn on the Altar, it shall not be extinguished.”

It is not difficult to excite people to lend a hand to a worthy cause. As soon as someone comes up with a new idea that sounds worthy and doable people are ready to lend a hand. Jews have always been in the forefront of new movement designed to help others.

The problem often exists where after the particular movement or project begins to drag on people lose interest and begin to slacken in their enthusiasm and the project begins to fall apart.

When the Mishkan was erected and the sacrifices were brought on the Mizbe’ach people were excited. It was something new and meaningful. Hashem knew in His ultimate wisdom that people will soon grow weary and the sacrifices will diminish and the flame will go out. Hence He instructed Moshe to forewarn them that the fire on the Altar was never allowed to go out

  • DVAR TORAH- PARASHAT VAYERA

When Avraham saw the three angels who appeared to him as men he immediately offered them water to wash up and food to eat. Their reaction was KEN TA’ASEH KA’ASHER DEBARTA, “…Do just as you said”. (Gen. 18,5) This is a peculiar response to someone who offers you an act of kindness

Rabbi Zevin, who was the editor of the Encyclopedia Talmudit for many years, had a unique explanation. When a promise to do and act is made, for it to happen three things must take place – first there must be the thought, then the speech and then the action. Speech comes between the thought and the action. Speech is the physical expression of the mind. Often it happens that between the thought and the action an element or more is lost.

That is why it was necessary for the angels to say to Avraham to do exactly as he said he would. We often see that people have all kinds of wonderful ideas, and at times even express their desire to carry out their brainstorm, but in the interim, the action is lost.
It requires special persistence and dedication to an idea in order to carry it out.We often have wonderful ideas and make commitments to ourselves or to others verbally to work on specific projects or perform some good deed and then fall short of doing it. This is what the Torah in the above passage implies, “do just as you said”. Carry out your good intentions.

DVAR TORAH- PARASHAT VAYIKRA

This week we begin to read the third book of the Torah. Most of it is devoted to the Priestly Code and the offerings that Jews had to bring on various occasions.

We find in nature that power rules. Which animals are the most feared ones? Certainly the wild animals that run freely through the forests. Among nations the same holds true. The more powerful nations, the ones with the greatest destructive weapons and armies are the most feared and the most dominating.

The Korbanot, or sacrifices, teach us a different lesson. None of the wild animals may be used for sacrifices. If one brings such an animal he defiles the altar. The domesticated animals are the ones considered holy and may be brought as a sacrifice.

With nations we learned from our founding father Avraham that it is not power or might that help a people survive. He introduced the ideals of justice and law and righteousness. They are the principles that help a people survive. In history we see that many powerful empires disappeared and the Jewish people, weak in power but strong in ideals, has survived.

DVAR TORAH- PARASHAT PEKUDAI

Although the most common phrase in the Torah is “And G-d spoke to Moshe saying.”, this week’s Parsha, Pekudei, includes the phrase “just as G-d commanded Moshe”. Why would the Torah feel the need to even mention such an obvious statement? And why is it repeated eighteen times in Parshat Pekudei alone?

Rabbi Meir Rubman explains that it’s very easy to be “sort of” Jewish, kind of learned or nice-ish. But if someone owed us money, would we accept anything BUT an exact, total payment? If we wouldn’t, then why should G-d accept anything less of us? On the other hand, it’s very hard to do EVERYTHING correctly. So what are we to do? As the Torah hints in this Parsha, the key is to do it right, just the way it was passed down from G-d to Moshe, and eventually to us. It’s not enough to do it somewhat correctly. It’s not enough to just live Jew-ish! As the number 18 suggests (chai – life), we should live as JEWS! So the next time someone asks you if you’re Jewish, tell them you’re not.. You’re a Jew!

Quotation of the Week :We come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by coming to see an imperfect person perfectly.” –Baal Shem Tov
